Sleep Evades Me

‘You’ve got to get up in the morning, you need a good night’s sleep, now go to bed!’

An often-heard message and more recently a loud chatter filling your head,

It’s logical and yet it’s challenging and too often not what you achieve,

The mind takes over, and instead sleepless nights reign, with little sign of reprieve,

‘Eight hours, sleeping right through, sleeping like a log, out like a light’,

Is it any wonder we feel pressure to slumber through the night?

And that’s before the hi-tech watches spying and telling us what we don’t want to hear,

That our sleep patterns are disturbed, just adding to our insomnia fears,

‘Yadda yadda’ is the mantra to employ when all this chatter wears us down,

When worrying about sleep or lack of it sends our brow into a frown,

‘Yadda yadda’ or any other sound to dull out the chatter before it amplifies,

While we pay gentle attention to the breath and to the space between the eyes,

With eyelids gently closed, twitching as they rest, gentle music playing, we do our very best,

And if we wake ahead of time and chatter fills our head, we return to the breath and send a soft focus there instead…
